  • Phrase coined by James Brian Quinn to denote an adaptive mode of strategy making that is not based on a fully articulated plan, but instead proceeds as a more nonlinear mixture of planning with spontaneous changes midcourse. Think of the Third Army Division's arrival at the gates of Baghdad: American field commanders were able to throw out the playbook for a siege of the city and instead push the limits of the city's defense, finding little resistance and entering the city without a pause.
