- Emma Cunningham (1818–87), a mother of five, was accused of the gruesome murder of her lover, Harvey Burdell, a financially secure New York dentist. Burdell was found strangled and stabbed to death on January 31, 1857, in his four-story boarding house at 31 Bond Street, where Cunningham served as his landlady.
