Liberal Party

Definition(s)

  • New York State's Liberal Party was founded in 1944 by anticommunist trade unionists and other politically liberal individuals who left communist-dominated political parties. By 2000 the party was describing itself as providing an “alternative to a state Democratic Party dominated by local party machines rife with corruption and a Republican Party controlled by special interests.” Many of the state's labor and educational leaders were instrumental in creating the party.
