Concept information

Preferred term

urban ethnography

Definition(s)

  • Urban ethnography, also known as street ethnography and/or fieldwork, is the “cornerstone of American social science,” as noted by criminologist Wilson Palacios. This research method motivated sociologists during the early part of the previous century, who had been prone to armchair theorizing, to actually observe individuals, groups, and social processes and collect firsthand data about them.
