  • Agrarian communities evolve from small, landbased rural populations that are directly or indirectly dependent on agriculture. A classic study of how agrarian communities work was conducted in the nineteenth century by the German sociologist Ferdinand Julius Tönnies (1855–1936), who studied gemeinschaft (versus gesellschaft) societies.
