Preferred term

international society

Definition(s)

  • The concept of “international society” was first elaborated as a key concept for international relations analysis in Charles Manning's book The Nature of International Society (1962). Manning's younger colleague at the London School of Economics and Political Science, Martin Wight, produced a series of works that largely remained unpublished during his lifetime; in these, he elaborated on what he called a society of states, which he juxtaposed with a system of states.
