Concept information

Preferred term

trotskyism

Definition(s)

  • American Trotskyism's official birth occurred in a rather unspectacular manner on October 27, 1928, with the expulsion of three experienced Communist Party (CP) activists—James Cannon, Max Shachtman, and Martin Abern—for declaring themselves to be in complete agreement with Leon Trotsky and the Russian Left Opposition on all principled questions. By the end of 1928, the three expellees had won over approximately 80 people to their movement, many of whom had been ejected from the CP for refusing to approve the expulsions of Cannon, Shachtman, and Abern in party branch votes.
