Concept information

Preferred term

indigenous languages as second languages

Definition(s)

  • Since the conception of American Indian education, school language policies have focused on assimilative and subtractive education: stressing the learning of English at the expense of ancestral languages. For indigenous families and communities, this has meant the suppression and loss of the mother tongue and a situation in which speaking an indigenous mother tongue in early childhood has become a rarity.
