  • A nutritional deficiency disease caused by the lack of vitamin C, which can reach epidemic proportions when people are deprived of sufficient fresh vegetables. Scurvy was a major cause of death during long voyages of discovery (when it was known as Purpurea nautica, after the bruise-like patches occurring under the skin), polar exploration, long winter war campaigns and famines.
