Preferred term

individual- and community-level effects of the fear of crime

Definition(s)

  • Fear of crime has been defined as an emotional response, or anxiety, caused by crime or environmental cues that a person associates with crime. Fear of crime is important to study because fear levels do not always directly coincide with the amount of crime in the community or one's own particular experience with or risk of being victimized by crime.
