energy resources
Definition(s)
- Materials that can be used by society to obtain energy (see Figure), including fuelwood, dung and bio-energy, non-renewable fossil fuels (coal and petroleum), non-renewable resources with effectively unlimited reserves (geothermal energy and nuclear energy) and renewable energy sources (hydropower, solar energy, tidal energy and wind energy). With the exception of nuclear, geothermal and tidal energy, the ultimate source of energy in all the other forms is the Sun, either at the present day or, in the case of fossil fuels, in the geological past.
