- African American members of the Methodist Episcopal Church South (which later became the United Methodist Church), a predominantly White denomination, established the Colored Methodist Episcopal (CME) Church in 1870. It would become the third-largest organization of Methodists of African descent, after the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church and the African Methodist Episcopal Zion (AMEZ) Church.
