Definition(s)

  • The U.S. Penitentiary (USP) in Terre Haute, Indiana, operated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP), was originally constructed in 1940 and was designated in July 1993 as the site for conducting executions of men sentenced to death under federal law. According to the BOP, Terre Haute was chosen as the site for executions because of its central geographic location and because it is a high-security prison housing the most dangerous federal inmates.
