- Sexually transmitted diseases are infections often transmitted by sexual contact between individuals. Sexually transmitted diseases most often are transmitted via vaginal intercourse (penetration of the vagina by the penis), anal intercourse (penetration of the anus by the penis), and oral sex (oral-genital contact).
