Preferred term

polychlorinated biphenyls

Definition(s)

  • Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a class of organochlorine chemicals that were discovered to be teratogenic in two mass human poisoning incidents due to contaminated cooking oil in Japan in 1968 and in Taiwan in 1978. The acute illness was termed Yusho in Japan and Yu-Cheng in Taiwan, for “oil disease.” The onset of acute symptoms of PCB exposure in adults is delayed after exposure by a month or more.
