  • The Hazardous Materials Transportation Act (HMTA) was signed into law in 1975 in order to better regulate the safe transport of dangerous materials and to harmonize conflicting state and local laws regarding the transportation of hazardous materials (also known as hazmats). The law represents the continued attempt by the Department of Transportation and other regulating bodies to respect the freedom of interstate commerce while guaranteeing public safety.
