Concept information

Preferred term

urban incivility

Definition(s)

  • If crime and criminality are the hallmarks of criminological enquiry, then concerns over urban incivility (or disorder), which came into the limelight beginning in the 1970s, drastically altered the face of the field. These concerns also reflected a sense of panic and even hysteria concerning public spaces, leading to a rigorous crackdown, which in turn gave rise to numerous social, legal, and ethical implications.
