  • The Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA) was adopted during the 89th U.S. Congress, one of several pieces of legislation that composed President Lyndon B. Johnson's overall Great Society programs. In many ways, ESEA represented an unprecedented commitment on the part of the federal government toward K–12 education with $1 billion earmarked for this program.
