  • The Bill of Rights (1791), which comprises the first ten amendments to the U.S. Constitution, became effective two years after the Constitution itself was ratified in 1789. This document prohibits the government from infringing certain rights of the people relating to religion, speech, the press, public assembly, gun ownership, searches and seizures, due process, and criminal proceedings.
