Concept information

Preferred term

arms limitation

Definition(s)

  • Although the Senate rejected the Treaty of Versailles in 1920, Wilsonian principles continued to animate diplomacy in the interwar era. American officials were especially attracted to arms limitation, believing that disarmament agreements would promote European prosperity, reduce tensions, and maintain peace while also allowing the United States to achieve parity with Britain on the seas and avoid controversial military or political obligations on the European continent.
