  • Since 1956 the American Bar Association (ABA) has played a part in evaluating the legal and intellectual qualifications of candidates for Supreme Court vacancies and other federal judgeships prior to Senate confirmation hearings. The practice continued despite recurrent criticism from some lawmakers and interest groups and despite sharp controversies on three occasions during the Nixon, Reagan, and first Bush administrations.
