Concept information

Preferred term

discursive formations

Definition(s)

  • Discursive formations are relatively autonomous configurations of power-knowledge which have sedimented and acquired a dominant societal or field-specific role. They are usually overly simplistically depicted in the literature as ‘authorless’ textual discourses of language and practice which in their decentredness are understood differently from ‘top-down’ ideologies based on the more rigid Marxist base-superstructure model.
