  • Huey Percy Newton is best known for his cofounding in 1966 of the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense, later known simply as the Black Panther Party (BPP). A complex and controversial figure, twice indicted for felony crimes and acquitted, Newton was a radical grassroots activist, public intellectual, writer, and political candidate who advocated for the rights of African Americans to self-determination and self-defense.
