  • The Older Americans Act (OAA) became law in 1965, the same year as the passage of Medicare and Medicaid, as part of the Great Society envisioned by President Lyndon Johnson. The programs associated with this Act enable older people to remain longer in their homes and communities and to delay or eliminate the need for institutionalization, such as in a nursing home.
