  • The Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) was proposed to bring the thirty-four democracies of the western hemisphere into the largest free trade area in the world, with a combined annual gross domestic product of more than $13 trillion and a population of over 800 million. The FTAA also was intended to establish closer political and economic links across the region and to reinforce economic policies of free market capitalism.
