Concept information
Preferred term
monoculture
Definition(s)
- The practice of cultivating a single species rather than many species together (polyculture). Monoculture is common in modern, industrialised agriculture and may be justified in terms of short-term economic return but tends to be unjustified in the long term or ecologically as there is loss of biodiversity and ecosystem complexity, with concomitant vulnerability to pests and disease, and to downturns in market prices.
