Definition(s)

  • The Socialist Party was established officially in July 1901 at a convention in Indianapolis, Indiana, which joined together former American Railway Union president Eugene V. Debs's Social Democratic Party with a moderate faction of the Socialist labor Party. The two groups had begun discussions a year before and in the 1900 presidential campaign jointly supported a ticket headed by Debs that received 86,935 votes (0.6 percent of the popular vote).
