interaction adaptation theory

Definition(s)

  • Interaction adaptation theory (IAT) was developed by Judee Burgoon, Lesa Stern, and Leesa Dillman. Interested in the ways in which people adapt to one another in dyads, the research team, led by Burgoon, realized that many of the theories in this area did not attend to a broad array of communication behaviors and functions, and the theories often undervalued the effect of one person's behavior on another person during everyday encounters.
