  • A filtration or separation technique which forces water (or other solvents) and solutes of low molecular weight through a semi-permeable membrane under hydrostatic pressure. It is used, for example, as a pretreatment method to purify the bone protein collagen for radiocarbon dating, thereby reducing contamination to a very low level.
