Snowball Earth

Definition(s)

  • A theory that ice ages between about 750 and 550 million years ago, during the neoproterozoic, affected the whole Earth, including the low latitudes. Key evidence comes from sedimentology and palaeogeography, and includes the warm-water carbonate rocks (cap carbonates) that immediately overlie glacial sediments, the analysis of carbon isotopes and palaeomagnetism.
