Concept information

Preferred term

interquartile range

Definition(s)

  • For quantitative data that have been sorted numerically from low to high, the interquartile range is that set of values between the 25th PERCENTILE (or P25) in the set and the 75th percentile (P75) in the set. Because this range contains half of all the values, it is descriptive of the “middle” values in a DISTRIBUTION. The range is referred to as the interquartile range because the 25th percentile is also known as the first QUARTILE and the 75th percentile as the third quartile.
