- En termes astronomiques, un élément lourd est tout élément plus lourd que l'hélium. Les astronomes se réfèrent également à ces éléments comme étant des "métaux" (bien que beaucoup, comme le carbone, ne le sont pas). Les éléments lourds, qui sont essentiels pour la formation de systèmes planétaires et l'évolution de la vie, ne sont formés que par nucléosynthèse à l'intérieur des étoiles.
