- Une protubérance solaire de matière relativement froide qui subsiste à la surface du soleil pendant des semaines ou des mois avec un changement global relativement faible. De telles protubérances sont suspendues au-dessus de la chromosphère par des champs magnétiques. Une protubérance quiescente peut soudainement s'éjecter vers l'extérieur et se dissiper, souvent pour être remplacée, au même endroit, par une nouvelle protubérance.
