Fore-edge painting

Definition(s)

  • Paintings done on the fore edge of a book, either with the edge solid so that the resulting image is visible when the book is closed, or, in the more usual sense of the term, with the edges fanned out so that the image is visible only when the book is open [AAT]; usually landscapes or scenes that depict the content of the book; earlier examples used heraldic or other motifs and designs; originally, when books were placed on shelves with the fore edge facing out, the title of the book was painted, inked or scorched on the edges of the leaves
