- Renaissance decorative form based on the classical candelabrum; used in vertical panels of decoration, it is symmetrical and incorporates curving forms that provide a focus or framing device for surrounding patterns and motifs; originally in painted decoration, it was soon carved in stone and marble; engravings of the form were sometimes called candeliere designs, and were used by decorators of ceramics in Italy; adopted as one of the most popular ornaments for printed books; the candelabra grotesque was revived in the 19th c.
