Example
- For use in gamma irradiation plants operated by isotron, pellets or granules of Cobalt 60 are doubly encapsulated in sealed stainless steel tubes. These "pencils" are transported in shielded "transportation flasks", vessels designed to facilitate the safe transfer of the Cobalt 60 pencils into the irradiation plant. The half life of Cobalt 60 is 5.33 years, equating to approximately 1% loss of activity each month, enabling a useful life for the source pencils of 15-20 years. (Source : INRA)
